Every autumn the same debate kicks off in offices and family WhatsApp groups across the Gulf: the new iPhone, or Samsung's Ultra? This year it's harder than usual, because the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra start at exactly the same price: $1,299. Price no longer settles it. The details do — which camera suits the way you shoot, battery life, how heavy the phone feels in your pocket, and a Gulf-specific change to how the iPhone handles SIM cards.
We've pulled the official specs from Apple and Samsung, compared them point by point, and finished with a clear verdict on who each phone is for.

Design: Samsung is noticeably lighter

Both screens are 6.9 inches, but they feel different in the hand. Samsung says the S26 Ultra is the thinnest Ultra it has ever made: 7.9mm and 214g, against 8.75mm and 249g for the iPhone. A 35-gram gap doesn't sound like much on paper, but you notice it after an hour of scrolling or shooting.

On the other hand, the iPhone's water resistance is higher on paper: IP68 to 6 metres versus 1.5 metres for Samsung. Both are plenty for everyday life, but neither warranty usually covers water damage, so don't take either phone swimming.
Colours: the iPhone comes in black, silver, a light "Glacier" blue and a new burgundy; Samsung offers Cobalt Violet, white, black and Sky Blue, plus two colours exclusive to its online store.

Display: the privacy feature wins it for Samsung
Both are among the best phone screens you can buy, and both refresh at up to 120Hz. But Samsung has added what it calls the first built-in privacy display on a phone: switch it on and the person next to you struggles to see your screen — no privacy screen protector needed. If you open your banking app on the metro or in a waiting room, that's genuinely useful. Samsung's QHD+ resolution is also slightly sharper than the iPhone's.
Apple, for its part, has redesigned the Dynamic Island to be smaller and show up to three Live Activities at once.
Cameras: two completely different philosophies

There's no outright winner here — just two approaches that suit different ways of shooting:
- Apple bet on control: for the first time on an iPhone, the main camera has a variable aperture that moves between f/1.48 for low light and f/4 to keep a whole group sharp. New pro controls for shutter speed and white balance come with it.
- Samsung bet on reach: a 200MP sensor, two telephoto lenses (3x and 5x) and optical-quality zoom up to 10x. Samsung says the S26 Ultra's wider lenses let in 47% more light on the main camera than the previous model.
| What you shoot | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long-range zoom (matches, concerts) | Galaxy S26 Ultra | Two telephoto lenses, 5x optical and 10x optical-quality zoom |
| Video | iPhone 18 Pro Max | 4K at 120fps with Dolby Vision, cinematic effects after shooting |
| Group and night shots | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Variable aperture adapts to light and depth automatically |
| Fine detail and cropping later | Galaxy S26 Ultra | 200MP lets you crop without losing much |
| Selfies and video calls | iPhone 18 Pro Max | 18MP front camera with Center Stage |
Performance: iPhone leads on single-core, both are more than enough
The A20 Pro is the first iPhone chip built on a 2nm process. Apple says graphics are up to 40% faster than last year, and a new vapour chamber delivers 40% better sustained performance. Samsung says the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy is 19% faster on the CPU, 24% on graphics and 39% on AI than the previous generation.
Early published tests show the iPhone ahead on single-core performance and efficiency, while Snapdragon stays competitive in long gaming sessions. In daily use — and even in most games — you won't feel the difference.

Battery and charging
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers the biggest battery jump in iPhone history: up to 45 hours of video playback and around 30 hours of typical use. Samsung relies on a 5,000mAh battery with faster charging: 75% in 30 minutes. The iPhone reaches about 50% in 15 minutes with a powerful charger. In both cases the charger is sold separately.

What every Gulf buyer needs to know: eSIM only
Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max sold in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman are eSIM-only — there's no physical SIM tray. The upside is a slightly larger battery (two extra hours of video playback). The downside is that you'll need to convert your line to eSIM with your carrier before switching. If you keep a physical SIM from your home country for banking OTPs, or buy local SIMs when you travel, check that those carriers support eSIM first — or consider buying a model sold elsewhere.
AI features
The iPhone 18 Pro Max's headline feature is Siri AI, Apple's completely rebuilt Siri. It's currently a beta in English only (with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish due in October), so if your phone is set to English you get it from day one. Samsung has offered Galaxy AI for several years, including live call translation across many languages — handy if you regularly speak to family or colleagues in another language.
For most English speakers, AI is now a draw: Siri AI is more personal and deeply tied to your apps, while Galaxy AI supports more languages today.
Updates and lifespan
Samsung promises seven years of security updates for the S26 series and has already started testing One UI 9 on Android 17. Apple doesn't publish a number, but it historically supports iPhones for many years — iOS 27 runs on devices going back to the iPhone 11. In practice, either phone will serve you for five years or more.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro Max sold in the UAE have a SIM tray?
No. Models sold in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states are eSIM-only, according to Apple.
Which has the better camera?
The iPhone is better for video, aperture control and selfies; Samsung is better for long-range zoom and fine detail. The right answer depends on what you shoot most.
Can I use Siri AI in the Gulf?
Yes, with your iPhone and Siri set to English. It's a beta for now and isn't available in Arabic yet.
The verdict
At the same price, it's hard to go wrong. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is stronger on battery, video and sustained performance, and ideal if you live in Apple's ecosystem. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is lighter, more flexible with zoom, and has a unique privacy display — and it still takes a physical SIM. If you're on an iPhone today, switching to Samsung needs a strong reason, and vice versa. Still torn? Ask yourself one question: do I shoot more video, or zoom in more?
