Ask investors in the Gulf who buy US stocks which platform they use, and one name keeps coming up: Interactive Brokers, or IBKR for short. It isn't the prettiest app and it isn't the easiest, but it's one of the cheapest and broadest brokers in the world, and it has been around since 1978. This review explains why experienced investors pick it, whether it works for beginners, and what you'll actually pay.

Interactive Brokers at a glance

IBKR is a US company listed on Nasdaq and regulated by major authorities including the US SEC and the UK's FCA. It accepts clients from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, and gives you access to more than 150 markets from a single account: US, European and Asian stocks, ETFs, bonds, options and futures.

For expats this has an extra advantage: your investment account isn't tied to the country you live in. If you move from Dubai to Riyadh — or back home — the account and your portfolio come with you.

Fees: where IBKR really wins

Commissions are the main reason for its reputation. On the fixed pricing plan (IBKR Pro Fixed) you pay half a cent per US share with a $1 minimum per order — so buying 100 shares costs about a dollar.

ItemApproximate costNote
US stocks (Fixed)$0.005 per share, $1 minimumCapped at 1% of trade value
US stocks (Tiered)$0.0005–$0.0035 per shareCheaper for active traders; exchange fees added
Currency conversionAbout 0.002%, $2 minimumAmong the cheapest FX rates available to individuals
Minimum depositNo meaningful minimumSome services need a higher balance
Inactivity feeNoneScrapped in 2021

The currency conversion deserves special attention. Many platforms take a hidden margin of up to 1% when converting your dirhams or riyals into dollars. At IBKR the cost is close to zero, which alone can save you hundreds of dollars over time if you invest larger amounts.

Platforms and tools

  • IBKR Mobile and GlobalTrader: GlobalTrader is a simplified app for beginners; IBKR Mobile is packed with tools for experienced traders.
  • Trader Workstation (TWS): a professional desktop platform — extremely powerful, but busy and complex.
  • Fractional shares: buy a slice of an expensive stock with as little as $50.
  • Interest on cash: uninvested cash above a certain level earns interest. Investors who follow Islamic finance principles can avoid this by keeping their cash balance low.

Opening an account, step by step

  1. Sign up on the official website or app and choose an account type (usually individual).
  2. Fill in your personal and financial details and your investing experience.
  3. Upload your ID or passport and proof of address — a recent utility bill or bank statement in your name works.
  4. Wait for approval, which usually takes from one day to a few days.
  5. Fund the account with an international transfer from your bank.

Who is it for?

It suits long-term investors building a portfolio of US stocks and ETFs, people investing medium to large amounts who care about fees, and traders who want access to multiple markets.

It may not suit complete beginners who want a simple app, or anyone who needs constant hand-holding from customer support.

FAQs

Is Interactive Brokers safe?

It is one of the largest and most heavily regulated brokers in the world, its shares are listed on Nasdaq, and client money is kept separate from company money.

Does IBKR accept residents of the UAE and Saudi Arabia?

Yes. It accepts residents of Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states, and the whole account opening process is online.

Is there an Islamic account?

No official one. Investors can still avoid interest and non-compliant products by not using margin and by choosing Sharia-screened stocks and funds.

The verdict

Interactive Brokers is a professional's tool: negligible fees, almost unlimited markets and a reputation built over more than four decades. The trade-off is an unfriendly interface and a learning curve at the start. If you're willing to spend an hour or two getting to know it, it will save you more over the long run than you might expect.
